On Friday Michigan joins 37 other states by banning smoking in public places.
Governor Jennifer Granholm is expected to sign the measure into law Friday afternoon at the Michigan Brewing Company in Lansing.
The law will take effect in May, banning smoking in restaurant, bars, workplaces and government buildings. Cigar bars, casinos, and smoke shops are exempt. The smoking ban isn’t the only change coming for smokers in 2010. Starting on January 1st, stores across the state will stock only ‘fire-safe’ cigarettes.
On Friday morning, Newschannel 3 headed to a tobacco store in Kalamazoo, where smokers were making a mad dash to stock up before the switch.
At Smokes on Burdick, they are just about out of the old kind of cigarettes, and they’ve been phasing in the new fire-safe ones. So far, workers there say the reaction has not been good.
The new cigarettes, which starting January 1st, will be the only kind stores can sell, are designed to prevent fires by burning out quicker.
The cigarettes have thicker bands of paper, sometimes referred to as ’speed bumps’ that make them far more likely to self-extinguish.
According to the National Fire Protection Association, cigarettes are the number one cause of fatal fires in the United States. Between 700 and 900 people die each year as a result of fires caused by cigarettes. But even with the life-saving possibilities, the owner of Smokes on Burdick says his customers are not happy with the new product.
“They don’t like it,” said John Milne, owner of Smokes on Burdick, “it’s another chemical they put in cigarettes. I’ve heard of headaches, dizziness, people that have flat out quit because it’s not enjoyable.”
In addition to people quitting because they don’t like the taste of the new cigarettes, workers at Smokes on Burdick also think more people will start rolling their own cigarettes to get around the fire-safe ones.
